WALKER ART CENTER

MINNEAPOLIS, MN

The bright yellow entrance was designed to strengthen the museum’s connection with the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, and to enhance visitor orientation and circulation within the facility

PROJECT INFORMATION:

What started as Mr. Walkers personal art collection for his in-home gallery in 1879, has grown to a contemporary museum that sees roughly 700,000 visitors a year. The Walker Art Center is home to over 13,000 modern art pieces, plus additional works of art in changing exhibits. Types of art include photographs, drawings, sculptures, costumes, paintings, and film. Part of the Walker Art Center’s campus renovation includes the museum’s redesigned front door – a clearly-labeled entrance on Vineland Place. The bright yellow entrance was designed by HGA Architects to strengthen the museum’s connection with the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, and to enhance visitor orientation and circulation within the facility.

PROJECT SCOPE:

MG McGrath Architectural Surfaces fabricated and installed aluminum plate panels at the entry vestibule, with a “Ferrari Yellow” auto body paint finish, as well as pre-patinated bronze plate panels at the vestibule, building, skylights, and roof. Our team also installed a custom aluminum-clad sliding pocket door, a custom aluminum ceiling system, stainless steel floor grilles, and all flashings and trim to match. At an earlier date, MG McGrath fabricated insulated aluminum material into our own EXP Style panel system and then installed them on the main exterior of the building.
