PROJECT INFORMATION

The construction of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum gave way for further redevelopment of the surrounding Colorado Springs area including parks and streets. The Vermijo redevelopment project includes the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the train tracks that will connect Vermijo Street, the USOPM, and America The Beautiful Park. Plans for a pedestrian bridge that connected the southwest part of the city with the main downtown area can be seen in city planning documents as far back as the 1980’s. The pedestrian bridge is bike and ADA friendly and is expected to help turn Vermijo into a “signature street” for the city. This seemingly simple trail bridge has adopted the nearby United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum’s architectural appeal while still complementing the timeless and flexible design of Vermijo Street

PROJECT SCOPE

MG McGrath fabricated and installed a custom flat & curved panel system consisting of .25″ aluminum plate material with a 3-coat fluoropolymer finish. Several of the panel configurations will feature a double-curved geometry. Nearly 2,000 square feet of these custom panels were installed on the interior bridge near the deck and around the circular oculus. Architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed this bridge and MG McGrath designed and engineered a panel system to withstand extensive wind and live loads, as well as accommodating the movement of the bridge structure
