PROJECT INFORMATION

The Alice L Walton School of Medicine was founded by Walmart heiress Alice Walton with the goal of reimagining medical education marking the start of a new generation of doctors focused on mental health, general wellness, and empathy. This accredited, nonprofit, 4-year MD program is a state-of-the-art medical education facility that equips and supports future health professionals to bridge the gaps to better health. AWSOM’s new 154,000 square-foot school features four levels of learning halls, clinical teaching spaces, recreation and wellness areas, 2-acre rooftop park and more. Their state-of-the-art technology supports traditional medicine education, but with added curriculum that embraces all areas of learning through art, nature, humanities, and science. The idea is that a holistic approach to medical education then empowers physicians to provide comprehensive and inclusive care delivered through overall well-being.

SURFACES PROJECT SCOPE

The largest and most notable metal work on this project is the bronze cladding in our “golden” Sahara custom bronze patina finish. 3,000 sqft of custom brass fins were fabricated with our Sahara custom bronze finish and installed into our unitized glass system with knife-blade curtain wall attachments. An additional 8,000 sqft of Sahara bronze panels were fabricated with a perforated pattern and installed as custom vertical sunshades. To match the sunshades and fins, nearly 30,000 sqft of the same Sahara custom finished bronze was fabricated into our own flush seam panel system for various elevations of soffit and wall cladding. Non-bronze paneling provided and installed by our team included over 7,500 sqft of flush seam metal panels from Pac Clad and Metal Sales in Medium Bronze and Champagne Metallic finishes.

GLASS & GLAZING PROJECT SCOPE

The new AWSOM building features 60,000 sqft of our own unitized curtain wall system in various depths with Viracon VNE1-53 insulated glass and Sunstorm Driftwood Mica & Classic Bronze framing finishes. Our team also installed 7,0000 sqft of Kawneer’s VG 451 Storefront with Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope glass in the same finish framing. For extra privacy and protection, 3,6000 sqft of channel glass systems with Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope glass was installed along with 1,100 sqft of SaftiFirst’s GPX Fire Resistive Curtain Wall units throughout. The last bits of glass & glazing work from our team consisted of 1,500 sqft of W&W structural glass walls, Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope skylights, glass markerboards, Kawneer medium stile doors, glass and railings, and frameless mirrors.
