HORN MONUMENT AT MEDTRONIC PLAZA

MINNEAPOLIS, MN

The monument’s steel intertwined ribbons were hand-crafted in 16 separate pieces and then welded together on-site

PROJECT INFORMATION

“The Horn” Monument is located at the US Bank Stadium’s main gate, serving as a congregation spot for fans and enthusiasts. Funded by Medtronic as a part of the company’s community sponsorship at the US Bank Stadium and ten-year partnership with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, the sculpture was designed by Alliiance Architects to resemble the Vikings’ famous Gjallarhorn. Standing 25 feet high and 107 feet long, and weighing a total of 38 tons, its steel intertwined ribbons are a representation of partnership and progress on and off the football field. The monument offers spectators a unique experience as they walk through it, seeing their own reflection and the skyline behind them in its mirror-like finish

PROJECT SCOPE

The monument’s steel intertwined ribbons were hand-crafted in pieces by MG McGrath Architectural Surfaces, and the shipped to the stadium in 16 separate pieces. Each piece was lifted into place with cranes and then welded together. Once the structural steel was set, MG McGrath utilized new point cloud technology to scan the structure and ensure that everything was positioned correctly. The final touches of the sculpture included over 700 linear feet of LED lights that intertwine the seven arches. In just under one week, our crews were able to install all of the structure’s aluminum and stainless steel cladding. The skin, if you were to unravel it, would extend to over 400 feet long. It features a 3-coat Kynar finish, produced in Minneapolis by Valspar Corporation. MG McGrath was also able to incorporate Medtronic’s branding on the sign wall, which features acrylic design on both the front and back side
