The Minnesota State Capitol Restoration Project is a $272.7 million, three plus-years restoration, renovation and repair initiative. Work began in fall 2013 and will end in 2017.
The Capitol was built in 1905 and, after more than a century of use, has reached a critical deterioration point:
- Crumbling exterior marble and stone
- Life-safety concerns
- Antiquated mechanical, electric and plumbing systems
- Inefficient and cumbersome spaces for the public
- Location: St. Paul, Minnesota

- Removed documented and cataloged original copper roof and architectural elements. Upper architectural elements were moved to MG McGrath shop to be repaired.
- Parge original substrate with mortar to repair damages and create a smooth surface with positive drainage.
- Installed Ice and Water shield membrane over concrete substrate
- Installed new stainless steel roof system as a back up roof.
- Installed another layer of ice and water shield over stainless steel roof
- Installed steel reinforcing to brace steel rod that supports copper ball.
- Installed new copper roof system.
