This month’s issue of AIA’s Architecture MN Magazine takes you through Surly Brewing Company’s new Minneapolis Brewery, and the history that led up to it. In 2011, Surly Brewing Company’s mission was to build a facility that could produce 185,000 barrels of beer annually and attract people from all over to enjoy it right there in its communal taproom and full-service restaurant. Today, Surly’s new 50,000-square-foot industrial-style destination brewery sits on an 8-acre site and draws in local beer enthusiasts as well as tourists from around the world.
MG McGrath helped craft one of the many fascinating features of the facility – the Surly bar wall, created from coloured stainless steel. Designed by Surly Brewing’s Michael Berglund, the metal paneled wall was custom perforated to allow passage of light, and lined with LED lights at the top and bottom to illuminate it from the back and define the image that was created.
