SURLY BEER HALL

MINNEAPOLIS, MN

The bar area focal point is an eclectic backdrop with a custom perforated image on perforated coloured stainless steel

PROJECT INFORMATION

Surly Brewing Company is one of the largest craft breweries in Minnesota, and as they grew, envisioned a larger space for customers to come for a full experience instead of just one beer. Surly opened up their new 50,000 square foot brewery in SE Minneapolis and spared no detail in this $30 million project. Their new facility is a two-story taproom and full-service restaurant housed under one communal space, complete with outdoor firepits and seating, lawn games, special event spacing, and our course, great beer

PROJECT SCOPE

Surly Brewing’s creative director, Michael Berglund asked our team to fabricate and install a decorative metal art piece for the wall behind the main bar as an impressive focal point for the new brewery. The art wall is 260 square feet and made up of eight 4’ X 8’ metal panels that feature a custom perforated bubble image design cut in-house by our team. Special programming on our laser was used to map and cut out different-sized and spaced holes in the metal, effectively transferring the image onto the metal without needing a decal or paint. LED backlighting was added to illuminate and accentuate the metal wall art with colors that could change depending on the mood or event. There are many other stainless-steel fixtures and hardware elements inside the brewery, so the material choice for this feature wall was easy. 16 gauge Rimex stainless steel was utilized and finished with a satin charcoal Colourtex finish. The smokey finish on the stainless steel reduced the reflectivity of the LED backlighting that shined through and softened the harsh glow during the day
