CHICAGO STATE STREET CITY TARGET

CHICAGO, IL

Carson Pirie Scott Co. closed the doors on it’s iconic Chicago Loop retail location and Target bought the space for an urban version of their stores they call “City Target”

PROJECT INFORMATION

As a part of the company’s plan to expand into city markets, retail giant Target opened its doors in a historic building in the Chicago Loop. This beautiful 1899 building is clad floor-to-ceiling with jet black cast-iron scrollwork and terra cotta facades that command the attention of the whole 1st & State Street corner. This building was designed by legendary architect Louis Sullivan, who had an eye for detail, valued superior craftsmanship, and was a dedicated mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright. The building was storefront retail space for Carson Pirie Scott Company, but after closing their doors from bankruptcy, the space was largely left unoccupied. Several years later, retail giant Target reached a deal with the city to buy the building with plans to open a smaller and more urban fitting Target store layout they called “City Target”. These Target locations are similar to the others, but offer a smaller selection of goods specifically selected to fit the needs of city shoppers

PROJECT SCOPE

MG McGrath provided and installed 2,100 square feet of 1/8″ custom perforated Firestone aluminum and 1,500 square feet of 1/2″ MDF panels. The aluminum panels were cut out at MG McGrath’s shop and installed on both floors in the windows as a display back for the interior and exterior of the building. The MDF panels were installed on the second floor and they act as a wall to cover up a storage area. All the material was finished in a custom “Target Red” paint or powder coat
